One could say WaMCom consists of - 95% official Mozilla milestone - 4% carefully selected fixes, official Mozilla development - 1% other changes the maintainer(s) want to include Disclaimer ========== No guarantess given. No support available. Use at your own risk. You are bound to the original license(s) of the enclosed sources. However, I guarantee these binaries and sources were produced by me, based on official Mozilla sources, plus slected add on patches. Please check http://wamcom.org/ for updates. Any terms mentioned might be trademarks of their respective owners. The term WaMCom has been selected in the hope nobody owns a trademark on it. If you have a problem with this software carrying the name WaMCom, please contact k@wamcom.org before talking to your lawyer :-) Problems and how you can help ============================= If you think you found a problem with WaMCom, you should first find out, whether the problem is WaMCom specific or not. First obtain the respective official base version from Mozilla.org. In WaMCom, use "Help/About" to find out which version of Mozilla your releases is based on. Compare the behaviour of the official Mozilla milestone and the WaMCom release. If both versions show the same problem, you should report the problem to Mozilla.org. However, if you found a problem particular to WaMCom, please provide feedback to k@wamcom.org Please explain what you have tested already to make sure the bug is in WaMCom, but not in Mozilla. Hopefully, you'll never find such problems. General release information =========================== The 2003-07-21 release contains of - mozilla sources from the MOZILLA_1_3_BRANCH, including the changes for Mozilla 1.3.1 - using a newer snapshot of the crypto library, NSS_3_7_BRANCH, however, with the important difference to exclude portions of bug 193367, in order to work around bug 209166. - more than 480 fixes (from about 4600) that happened to the main development of Mozilla, after Mozilla 1.3.1 was created. Hopefully, the chosen set of patches improves stability and correctness of this snapshot. Please the "fixes-patches" archive. Patches that are in a directory named "done" are included. But check the full patch file, or even better, the included full -features source archive what is actually included. - some fixes to the Mail application, most notably the "mark-as-junk-and-delete-in-one-step" feature. - some additional patches to other bugs, that have not yet landed on the trunk of Mozila, see the "features-patches" archive. New in this release =================== Previous release was 2003-07-10 New release is 2003-07-21 - updated to newer snapshot of crypto library - bug 213084 fixed, crashes with S/Mime messages - minor editor fix for bug 202046 removed, because of a regression - User Agent string now contains the real release date and the additional string "wamcom.org" - This release does not include a full source archive, please use the source archive from 20030710 in addition with the 20030710-20030721 diff. Language Packs ============== Official language packs for the Mozilla base version will not work with WaMCom. However, help to create full language packs is welcome, contact k@wamcom.org In the future, the language differences between the base version and the WaMCom release *might* be published, enabling translator teams to build updated language packs. Linux ===== Linux binaries are "extract-and-run", no installation needed. Note, however, that on first startup, Mozilla must initialize a private registry file. The user starting Mozilla the first time must have write access to the Mozilla directory. Mac OS X ======== The Mac OS X binary is disk image. Download, double click to mount, and run the contained icon. However, if you are going to install addons, like spellchecker dictionaries, you should copy the binary to your disk. Mac OS 8.6 / 9 aka classic ========================== The Mac OS classic binary is a SIT archive, you'll need the StuffIt Expander to extract. You will get a folder that contains the application. Run the Mozilla program contained in the folder. It has been said WaMCom classic releases run on OS versions as old as Mac OS 8.6. A common question is Will you provide WaMCom releases based on future versions of Mozilla? As of today, the answer is: No Why? Because it is too much work. The Mozilla developers stopped caring for Mac OS classic between Mozilla 1.2 and 1.3. However, the required build environment was still mostly maintained during that time. It was relatively easy to compile Mozilla 1.3.1 for Mac OS 9, but it would be much more work for Mozilla 1.4. In addition, when new Mac code is written, we see that only code gets written that works with OS X. For the 1.3.1 series of WaMCom for OS 9 version, it was necessary to remove some OS X specific code to make it work. It would require much more work to create a 1.4 based version. However, as long as the WaMCom 1.3.1 series is maintained, there will most likely be updated releases for OS 9, too. But note this also depends on access to the required CodeWarrior compiler, which can currently be used on a machine "at work", and hopefully using this machine will be possible in the future, too. Windows ======= The win32.zip archive does not require installation. Simply unzip into a new directory of your choice, and run the contained mozilla.exe. Please note, never try to overwrite older directories, always extract into a new empty directory. The win32.exe is an installation program that interactively installs the software on your computer in the directory of your choice. Please note, no guarantee can be given this software is virus free. Please make sure you are running a current anti-virus application. Source files ============ Please apologize the patchwork of multiple different patches and files and packages. I'm doing this to save some time, it also allows you to find out what happened between releases. Tho patches and other partial source packages are provided in addition. You can always use the full source archive provided and ignore the other files. Other platforms =============== Will WaMCom be available for other operating systems, like OS/2, Solaris, etc.? It depends on you to help out. Find someone who is able to compile, the full sources are provided. Notify k@wamcom.org if you have produced a build for another platform Distribution ============ I am not a lawyer. I *think* it is fine to distribute this application. I *think* you don't need to ship source code, but in my opinion, you always should. This project would not have been possible, if source code were not available. To make sure you do the right thing, please follow the licenses available in the source files. MD5-Sums ======== Below are MD5 checksums for the files in this release, and possible of some files from previouses releases, that might be of interest when using the incremental files. adc802a35ad950914115cc9f01442da9 wamcom-131-linux-20030721.tar.gz 5adcb26cf4647f711b4f310a03d324bd wamcom-131-linux-static-20030721.tar.gz 230cb4fe477d58a1ff74e0fb5635620e wamcom-131-macosx-20030721.dmg 71d7ef1106143e5e01c8f68129dbaf0c wamcom-131-macos9-20030721.sit 2d0e9c4210e40a00883b3689858a0bb5 wamcom-131-win32-20030721.exe 8b9e558fcbdb3e6be6401739c4d6dd6d wamcom-131-win32-20030721.zip cee28df0e1a7fa1e3134ac548cc3d6e8 wamcom-131-source-20030710.tar.gz a7cb9f283806801889a57fa1505c1538 wamcom-131-base-20030613.tar.gz 61f53187442b5c0e40fab0ab18329998 wamcom-131-features-20030613 f919f7e76e88811b77617480b8d9d829 wamcom-131-fixes-20030613 b8f2131c30065eeeb81465e3ce3c59bc wamcom-131-fixes-diff-20030613-20030624 2c2dd6b87af828c2779848fc92b7f9e1 wamcom-131-diff-20030624-20030710.gz dad9d83d41e4dc239b2dee07e40fc2cf wamcom-131-diff-20030710-20030721.gz e81fdf82ade3d5f3d1448a223c410499 20030613-features-patches.tar.gz 8778e9f2fa9f4b60d6560c95692ec3c9 20030613-fixes-patches.tar.gz 7a5b5e1d2a15d224e17925ef4d07df87 20030624-fixes-patches.tar.gz 8abdb33843cf47929e9672cd2e6cd41e wamcom-131-20030710-patches.tar.gz fd560c1560f3934a7f16e177944306b4 wamcom-131-macos9-spell.sit PGP/GPG ======= This README file is signed with my GPG key.
